Museet er det eneste naturhistoriske museet i landsdelen. Museet ble startet opp i 1828, men har endret både navn og lokaliteter siden den gang. I dag ligger Naturmuseum og botanisk hage, Universitetet i Agder på Gimle gård i Kristiansand.
